U.s. School Military Leadership - 1701 Words

In recent years women in the United States have been making advancements in leadership roles. One place that women, in the past, had not been able to take on more power is the military. In just the past few years’ women have been allowed to serve in combat roles, however little advancements have been made for them to serve in special operation forces. In just the last few weeks some this has been questioned as two women are about to graduate from ranger school. Having women graduating from ranger school, a grueling leadership course in the military, shows advancements women are making in leadership roles today. The fact that these two women have been able to make it to graduation at an elite military leadership course is huge. While these two women were able to graduate from the ranger program, according to military rules, even though they have completed the ranger program they are not allowed to try out or serve on the ranger regiment (Oppel). This shows the heavy divide in female to male leadership roles. Despite the heavy restrictions placed on female soldiers this new development may be just what is needed to allow women to have a place in higher leadership roles. According to Oppel the Army and other branches of service have until January 1st to decide what jobs are going to be open to women. This shows the leading role these women have already taken on. They are setting the way for other women to make advancements in all fields. Women have been taking on more responsibility in the military as time has moved on. They have served our nation in combat and some have even been a part of support teams to help Ranger and Navy SEALS in the past. According to Oppel, â€Å"some women even perform intelligence gathering as part of SEAL Team 6’s top- secret Black Squadron. â€Å" This shows that women have been a vital part of military victories for years. One commander mentioned in Oppel piece in defense of women is Colonel Fivecoat. He said that he would always make sure two women would be assigned to his company.

Okonkwo as Tragic Hero in Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe

One of the most commonly asked questions about the novel Things Fall Apart is: why did Achebe choose a tragic hero, Okonkwo, as the main character in the story. According to Nnoromele, â€Å"A hero, in the Igbo cultural belief system, is one with great courage and strength to work against destabilizing forces of his community, someone who affects, in a special way, the destinies of others by pursuing his own. He is a man noted for special achievements. His life is defined by ambivalence, because his actions must stand in sharp contrast to ordinary behavior†(Nnoromele). In my opinion, he chose this type of hero to show the correlation between Okonkwo’s rise and fall in the Igbo society to the rise and fall of the Igbo culture itself. However, once he kills Ikemefuna, everything seems to go down hill from there. His family is banished from the village, he loses everything that he worked hard for his whole life, and life as he knew it had been turned upside down. His chi had changed from being one of the best, to one of the worst in a single gun shot. Bad chi seems to be the main cause of all of Okonwo’s failures, and leads many to perceive him as a tragic hero. On the other hand, another characteristic of Okonkwo that causes him to be seen as a tragic hero is his struggle to deal with the crumbling Igbo culture around him. Upon his return to Umuofia from his motherland, everything has changed among the Igbo people. The white men had completely torn apart a culture which at one point seemed to be so strong. Some had even been converted into Christians and almost everyone was questioning their own beliefs. According to Stephen Criswell, when Okonkwo returned, he had a decision to make between standing up for what he believed in and against what he hated, or complying with the white man’s way and being like everyone else in the tribe(Criswell).
